With all of our new devices and ways we digest content we have a much more personalized and convenient way to absorb news, entertainment and culture.
However, now that I have this awesome new power to choose ONLY the services and platforms I want, I’m also realizing that I’m actually having a much worse experience enjoying them all. This was supposed to be a good thing for the consumers however, now that every platform has walled off their content (see Disney) I have to subscribe to multiple services and install multiple apps just to get back to what DirectTV gave me all within ONE user interface.
That’s right I cut the cord and I was proud, for a moment. I cancelled my DirectTV service that used one application and had one subscription, and NOW I have Roku with 7 apps and different subscription rates (that are constantly changing) and 8 different user interfaces (Including the Roku UI). This is not a better experience for me or my wife. We love movies and HBO/Netflix series. But we can’t enjoy them as easily as we used to. And were not saving moving like we thought we would. At the end of the day, it ends up costing about the same as DirectTV and there hidden fees.
To me, it feels like we have Corporations vs. Users? HBO does not care that there pause button is the back arrow and NO OTHER APP uses that. AMAZON PRIME VIDEO doesn’t care that the pause button has to be selected by using the down arrow, then the pause button!! And so on. NONE of these applications use the same UI for something as simple as playing videos.
Not only are the designs so different but the companies that make these applications are in such fierce competition that it seems like they are deliberately trying to make their UX unique therefore being different from the others.
Will they (Big Tech Companies) ever work together for the greater good? Go open source? Decentralized etc…
Where is the industry going? Tech and entertainment.
Will apps be used in the future? Google is now allowing users to view instant apps?
What about web apps?
Should ROKU force a standard for their device like Apple did with their App guidelines?
